Review & Description

Celestron PowerSeeker telescopes are a great way to open up the wonders of the Universe to the aspiring astronomer. The PowerSeeker series is designed to give the first-time telescope user the perfect combination of quality, value, features and power. Amateur astronomy is a great family hobby that can be enjoyed year round, and Celestron’s PowerSeekers are the ideal choice for families looking for an affordable and high quality telescope that will provide many hours of enjoyment for children and adults alike. Celestron's value priced PowerSeeker 70AZ is an affordable entry level telescope with some nice extras like a correct image prism and "The Sky" astronomy software included. The package also includes an Alt-Azimuth mount with adjustable aluminum tripod, high and low power eyepieces, a 3X barlow lens, and a 5 power cross hair finder scope.

The PowerSeeker 70AZ comes disassembled in a compact box, but the fully illustrated quick set-up guide makes it easy to assemble. Go ahead and try it out in the daytime, that's the best time to align the finder scope while looking at a distant tree or telephone pole.

The optics of the PowerSeeker 70AZ are surprisingly good, especially when I use the low power 20mm eyepiece. The correct image prism and the 20mm eyepiece give me a magnification of 35X, so backyard birds seem five times closer than with my seven power binoculars. The PowerSeeker 70 can be upgraded with standard 1.25 inch telescope eyepieces. A 25mm plossl eyepiece for example gives a true field of view of almost 2 degrees for delightful views of star clusters like the Pleiades, while a 6mm eyepiece provides a magnification of 117X, just right to see the rings of Saturn or the cloud bands on Jupiter. The included 4mm eyepiece (175X magnification) might be too much power: I can see Saturn's rings but at 175X it's not easy to focus and it's not easy to keep planets centered in the field of view.

The Alt-Azimuth mount included with the PowerSeeker 70AZ is lighter and easier to use than an Equatorial mount, but it does not track stars and planets. As soon as you get the Moon centered in the eyepiece it starts drifting toward the edge, this is caused by rotation of the Earth. The Moon may stay in the low power eyepiece for two or three minutes, but with the high power 4mm eyepiece (175X magnification) a star will disappear in only twenty or thirty seconds.

Celestron's PowerSeeker 70AZ is a real value because it has very good achromatic optics in a package that's light, portable and affordable. The drawback is that it has a lot of plastic parts, including the finder scope and the 3X barlow. For a more rugged alternative, take a look at Celestron‘s AstroMaster 70 AZ which comes with better eyepieces and includes a sturdier Alt-Azimuth mount. --Jeff Phillips

Pros:

  • Very good optics
  • Correct image prism
  • Easy no tool set-up
  • Light, portable, and affordable
Cons:
  • Light weight tripod
  • Does not track stars and planets
  • Plastic finder and barlow lens

TE1) CELESTRON NEXSTAR 4SE TELESCOPEAmazon.com Review Celestron’s NexStar 4 SE is the smallest and most portable telescope in Celestron’s NexStar SE series. Using a Maksutov-Cassegrain optical design, the NexStar 4 SE puts the magnifying power of a four foot long telescope into an optical tube only 13 inches long.

Celestron NexStar 4
Moon
The NexStar 4 SE features computerized finding and tracking of nearly 40,000 celestial objects, no-tool setup is easy, and planetarium software for your PC is included.
Celestron NexStar 4
Jupiter

The NexStar 4 SE delivers great views of the Moon, the planets, and bright deep space objects. The standard equipment 25mm E-Lux plossl eyepiece gives a magnification of 53X, enough to see the Lunar disk, Saturn’s rings and the major cloud bands on Jupiter. It’s easy to add optional eyepieces to zoom in for more detail. Using a 12.5mm X-Cel eyepiece for 106X magnification I can see several cloud bands on Jupiter and I can even pick out the small dark shadow as one of Jupiter’s moons passes in front of the planet. On a good night I can push the magnification up to 230X with a 6mm plossl eyepiece while viewing the Moon and planets.

The NexStar 4 SE package also includes a sturdy adjustable tripod, a motorized alt-azimuth mount, and the NexStar hand held computer controller. I don’t need star charts or a GPS reciever to operate this telescope. Celestron’s patented SkyAlign procedure is easy to use, and experienced users will like the two-star align and solar-system align options because they are even quicker to set up. The steel tripod and alt-azimuth mount provide a solid base for the NexStar 4 SE. Vibration is not a problem, even while focusing at high power. The computerized tracking is also very good, easily keeping planets in the field of a high power eyepiece. The disadvantage of a computerized scope, of course, is battery consumption. I find that rechargeable NiMH batteries work very well in the NexStar 4SE; a set of batteries lasts all evening and I don’t need to worry about electrical cords getting tangled in the dark.

The NexStar 4 SE is a great portable telescope, just right for visual observing or for taking short exposure pictures of the Moon and planets. It’s only fair to warn you that a small telescope has its drawbacks, however; there are thousands of objects in the NexStar database that are simply too dim to see with a four inch telescope. --Jeff Phillips

  • Very good optics

Review & Description

Setting the pace for design, dynamics and technical precision, Blackhawk soars high in ultimate performance. Engineered with unsurpassed optical performance and durability by those who understands the harsh hunting conditions scopes have to endure. Designed for the discriminating hunters who demands only the best. Be it a compact or a large scope that set your sights, Blackhawk spotters set the standard for portability, optical performance and value. In addition, the new Mossy OakBreak Up Camouflage model helps you blend in on your hunt! Backed by Limited Lifetime Warranty. The Barska Blackhawk 60mm spotting scope is a terrific value because it offers very good optical performance in a compact and affordable package. The scope itself features waterproof design, multicoated optics, and a zoom eyepiece with magnification ranging from 20X up to 60X. The accessories include a light weight table-top tripod, a soft caring case, and a durable hard shell case that will allow the rubber armored scope to stand up to a lifetime of use.

The Blackhawk 60mm spotting scope uses a multi-coated objective lens and rugged porro-prism design for bright, clear images. At 100 yards, I can clearly focus in on a target, even when I crank the magnification up to the maximum 60X. When I use the scope for wildlife spotting, the sweet spot seems to be about 30X magnification; 30X gives me an ideal combination of sharp images and a wide field of view, perfect for identifying Puffins and Pelicans along the coast.

I also like the compact size and light weight of the Blackhawk 60. At only 14 inches long and weighing less than two pounds, the Blackhawk 60 is light enough to use a photo tripod such as the SLIK U-9000 in the field. Like other entry level spotting scopes, the Barska Blackhawk 60 uses an Achromatic objective lens, which means that some false color or blue fringing is noticeable at high power.

I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the quality and value of the binoculars and spotting scopes imported by Barska the last few years. The Barska Blackhawk 60mm spotting scope simply offers very good optical performance for a very reasonable price. --Jeff Phillips

Pros:

  • Excellent price/performance ratio
  • Very good Achromatic optics
  • Waterproof design with rubber coating
  • Premium hard shell case included
Cons:
  • Blue fringing noticeable at high power
  • Limited eye relief for eyeglass wearers

Sky-Watcher Great Start 70 AR-AZ2 70mm Refractor Telescope

SkyWatcher Great
Sky-Watcher Great Start 70 AR-AZ2 70mm Refractor Telescope
by Sky-Watcher
4.6 out of 5 stars(8)

(Visit the Top Rated in Telescopes list for authoritative information on this product's current rank.)

Review & Description

The Skywatcher GreatStart 70AR-AZ2 is a great value in a small telescope, with some real improvements over the typical 60mm beginner scope. Instead of wildly exaggerated claims of “500 power” magnification, Skywatcher equips the SW 70AR-AZ2 with the basics: excellent optics, two Super Plossl eyepieces, a 2X barlow lens, and a solid Alt-Azimuth mount. The package also includes illustrated instructions and planetarium software for your PC.

Skywatcher’s GreatStart 70AR-AZ2 features unusually good optics for an entry level telescope. The best objects for small telescopes are bright objects like the Moon and planets. When I look at the Moon for example, I‘m treated to sharp, high contrast views of the Moon‘s mountains, craters and lava flows. The little orange disk of Mars, the rings of Saturn, and even the cloud bands of Jupiter all show up quite nicely with the 12mm eyepiece, about 58x magnification. Planet details show up even better when I add the 2X Barlow for a total magnification of 116x. Daytime views with the Sky-Watcher 70AR are also quite good. The 90 degree diagonal mirror produces images that are right side up but reversed left to right. When I use the 25mm eyepiece for a magnification of 26x I see daylight images that are crisp and colorful and sharp to the edge of the 2 degree field of view.

The Skywatcher 70AR-AZ2 also features an Alt-Azimuth mount with adjustable aluminum tripod. The tripod is easy to assemble, and includes a slow motion screw to adjust the altitude. An Alt-Azimuth mount is light and easy to use; there are no counter-weights to balance or polar axis to align, just point the telescope and look. As soon as you get the Moon or a planet centered in the eyepiece, however, it starts drifting toward the edge; this is caused by rotation of the Earth. Celestial objects will stay in the low power field of view for three or four minutes, but with a high power eyepiece they may disappear in a minute or less.

The Skywatcher GreatStart 70AR-AZ2 is a great choice for someone who wants a telescope that can be used during the daytime as well as at night. The sharp optics produce a right side up image, the mount is light and easy to use, and the included planetarium software helps you find planets in the night sky. Bottom line, this telescope is an all around great value, and much better than the so-called “500 power” “professional” telescopes seen in toy stores. --Jeff Phillips

Pros:

  • Very good Achromatic optics
  • Plossl eyepieces and 2X barlow included
  • Light, portable and easy to use
  • Rugged low maintenance design
Cons:
  • Does not track stars and planets

Astro Tech Voyager Mount

The Astro Tech Voyager Mount is an exceptionally well-made and stable mount. The Astro Tech Voyager Mount is perfect for grab-and-go terrestrial observing and casual visual astronomy. The lightweight all-metal Astro-Tech Voyager can hold substantial optical tubes weighing up to 20 pounds (9kg), but there are no heavy counterweights to attach to balance a heavy tube and no alignment on the celestial pole needed to start observing. Simply slide your optical tube into the Vixen-style dovetail on the Voyager mount's altitude axis and start viewing.

The angle of the mount's altitude arm that holds your scope can be changed from vertical to 45 degrees on either side of vertical. This allows you to put the azimuth control knob on either the right or left hand side of the mount to suit your personal observing preferences. The mount has two slow-motion control knobs (one altitude and one azimuth), plus an 8.25" flexible control cable that can be substituted for the short azimuth control knob for more convenient tracking when the mount is used with physically longer scopes.

The Astro-Tech Voyager mount has a dual friction clutch system that lets you quickly point a scope towards a target manually, then track it in any direction with the smooth 120-tooth worm gear 360 degree slow-motion controls. There's no need to undo mechanical clutches in order to aim your scope as you have to do when conventional slow motion controls run out of travel before you reach your target. If you want to aim your scope at another part of the sky, simply push it. The friction clutches disengage and the scope moves freely 360Degree in any direction. Once you're on or near the target, the slow motion control knobs let you center the object precisely and track it accurately as it moves across the sky or landscape. Friction adjustment knobs are provided to let you adjust the freedom of the manual slewing moti Read more
